By MATT WATTS / STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII writer, producer, and writer on a post-Cameron story for a movie like this one.
«I think it’s a very different take on a story that’s never really been told before,» said Scott Buck, who co-wrote «Rogue One» with «Star Wars» director Rian Johnson and the pair worked together on «The Force Awakens» (2017).
«There’s this idea that this was going to be a sequel.
I think there are some really good stories that can be told with a sequel to ‘Rogue One.'»
The new film opens on Dec. 18, 2020, and is a prequel to the prequel trilogy of Star Wars films.
«Rogue 1» takes place in the years leading up to «Rogue Two» (1977) and «Rogue Three» (1983), two of the most beloved films of all time, but the filmmakers also want the movie to reflect the times in which it was made.
In «RogueOne,» the first film in the trilogy, a young Skywalker (John Boyega) is raised by his father to be the heir to the galaxy’s throne.
After the death of his mother (Gwyneth Paltrow) in «Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,» Luke is left with the task of bringing the old Sith Lord Darth Vader back from the brink of death.
«We wanted it to be Luke and Vader’s story,» said Buck.
«But, I think it has a lot more hope than what we’re used to.»
The film’s director, Gareth Edwards, will direct the next chapter in the saga.
«There are so many great, great stories that could be told,» said Edwards.
«And I think that’s why we’re trying to do that, because I think we’re just starting to explore that space.
And so I think the world has always been filled with stories that we could tell.»
Rogue One is set after «Rogue Five,» the 2014 sequel to the classic 1977 Star Wars film that was filmed in New Mexico and the Bahamas.
The original trilogy is set five years after «The Phantom Menace,» a 1977 film that brought the Star Wars universe to a new, more galactic stage.
Rogue One’s plot involves Luke Skywalker’s quest to save his father, Darth Vader (Andy Serkis), from the Sith Lord’s evil.
«It was an adventure story that started with the death in ‘Star Trek II,’ » said Buck, referring to the third film in George Lucas’ Star Wars saga.
The film also introduces a new character, the «old» stormtrooper Ben Solo, played by Anthony Daniels.
The new «Rogue» takes the franchise in a different direction.
«When you think about it, ‘Rogue’ and ‘Star’ are two very different stories that started out on a similar platform and ended up on different platforms,» said Johns, who wrote «Rogue Four» (2016) and directed the upcoming «Rogue Six: A Star Wars Story» (2018).
«It’s kind of like the beginning of a story where you’ve got this very specific character, and he’s very familiar with a lot, and then you start seeing other characters come in and fill the story.
That’s a story of the characters coming together.»
The new trilogy’s characters also come from different worlds, as well.
«So there are all these people who are very different in their worlds and cultures and in their minds and in the way they view the universe,» said Daniels, referring back to the original trilogy.
«They’re all trying to survive and do the right thing and to survive in the Star Destroyers.
There are all kinds of different people.»
The «Rogue1» trailer, produced by Bad Robot, is available on YouTube and on the Bad Robot app.

The first two «Star» films, released in 1977 and 1980, have been among the most popular movies of all-time, with more than 4.5 billion viewers.
The third film, «Return of the Jedi,» in 1983, is also considered one of the best science fiction movies ever made.
The latest Star Wars spinoff, «Rogue Unbound,» is in development and will be released this fall.
«StarWars.com will be reviewing the first two Star Wars movies in our review of the third and fourth,» a statement from the company said.
«In addition to a comprehensive look at the saga, we’ll be talking to the creators of the original ‘StarWars’ trilogy about the latest installment and how the franchise is evolving.»
